There’s a place on Sydney’s doorstep, in the upper Hawkesbury Valley that you have probably never heard of. A little pocket of paradise, so beautiful, that the locals have been keeping it a secret.
It is in plain sight, yet hidden away. It is nearby, yet far removed from everything else. It can be seen from afar, but you have to get up close to truly know its beauty.
Our little secret is Cornwallis and it is just three minutes drive from Windsor. The story behind how Cornwallis got its name dates back to 1796, when nearby Windsor was still called Green Hills. An Irish merchant sea captain, Michael Hogan, purchased a 400 acre plot of land here on the banks of the Hawkesbury River and proceeded to name it after his ship, the ‘Marquis Cornwallis’, which was in turn named after a famous English military General, Lord Charles Cornwallis. The Marquis Cornwallis was well known for its murderous journey from Cork, Ireland, to Port Jackson in 1795 when Hogan and his men cruelly defeated two mutinies on board while transporting around 220 Irish convicts to our shores.
And it is here in picturesque Cornwallis, hidden among the orange groves on the banks of the Hawkesbury River where you find “Cornwallis House”. A luxurious holiday home, ideal for those looking to find the perfect escape.
